1. Overall Introduction of the Tourism and Cultural Resources
（1） World-famous Tourism Brand
Taohuayuan, the Homeland of Soul, is located in the southwest of Changde City, Hunan Province. It is well known as a National Key Scenic Spot, a Key Cultural Relics Unit under State Protection and a National Forest Park. It is identified by Cihai (China’s largest comprehensive dictionary) as the only prototype of Taohuayuan described in Tao Yuanming’s Record of Taohuayuan and is now declaring for the qualification of National 5A Scenic Spot. It is a place full of love, warmth and harmony between human and nature.
Taohuayuan has been eulogized everywhere by generations of the Chinese for the past 1600 years. The ideal lifestyle here has always been the pursuit of the Chinese people and an important carrier to recall the nostalgia and preserve the traditional culture.
(2) Unique Natural Tourism Resources
Together with Zhangjiajie Tourism Resort and Fenghuang Ancient City, Taohuayuan creates a triangle golden tourism route in Northwestern Hunan. With the picturesque scenery of green hills and clear waters, Taohuayuan is recognized as “the 35th Blessed Spot” and “the 46th Cave Paradise”; it is one of the five coexistences of the Blessed Spot and the Cave Paradise in China. “A Fishing Village Bathed in Sunset Glow”，one of The Eight Views of Hunan, is in Taohuayuan.
There is in the Taoyuan Craft Art Museum the largest willow-root carving in China, which is 15.88 meters long, 6.3 meters wide and 3 meters high. The One-hundred-bed Museum here is the only place in Chinese tourism resorts which boasts more than 100 Taoyuan Craft Woodcarving Beds.
(3) Long History and Profound Culture
Taohuayuan has a long history and rich culture. She embraces other cultures while preserving her own uniqueness. According to the records, many celebrities, like Qu Yuan, Li Bai, Du Fu, Liu Yuxi, Lu You, Zhu Xi, etc. had ever visited Taohuayuan and left a wealth of poetry, couplets, inscriptions and other valuable cultural heritages. There are here more than 20 state-level ancient buildings and more than 50 national second-class cultural relics.
After thousands of years of cultural accumulation, Taohuayuan integrates traditional Chinese pastoral culture, farming culture, poetry culture, Confucianism and Taoism reclusive culture together into a harmonious whole.
2. Introduction of Scenic Spots
(1) General Introduction
Located in the lower reach and on the southern bank of the Yuan River, Taohuayuan Tourism Resort is 34 kilometers away from the Changde City Proper and 15 kilometers away from Taoyuan County. It was first built in the Jin Dynasty, took its shape in the Tang Dynasty and reached its climax in the Song Dynasty. Being the prototype of Taohuayuan described in Tao Yuanming’s Record of Taohuayuan, it has a long history and rich culture and has been eulogized everywhere by generations of the Chinese for thousands of years. It is now a National 4A Scenic Spot, a National Key Scenic Spot, a Key Cultural Relics Unit under State Protection and a National Forest Park.
Covering an planning area of 157.55 km2, Taohuayuan Tourism Resort boasts has about core area of about 20 mu where lie its key scenic spots such as Qin Creek, Qin Valley, Taohua Mountain, Taoyuan Mountain, Wuliu Lake, Taohuayuan Ancient Town, Vast Peach Grove, Taochuan Palance, etc. Famous for its beautiful landscape, grand temples and pavilions, abundant poems and tablet inscriptions, and legendary history, it is an ideal place for the modern people to rest their souls.
(2) Qin Creek
Qin Creek, also called Shui Creek, is an important branch of the Yuan River. It is told that Qin Creek led the fisherman of Wuling in Record of Taohuayuan by Tao Yuanming to “Taohuayuan”. Now, you can boat along Qin Creek, enjoy the sight that bewitched the fisherman of Wuling, and indulge yourself in the view of the peach trees and bamboos along the creek, relieving yourself from the obsession of time tickling away. In the early morning after rain, Qin Creek, shrouded with translucent mist, circles the water edge and the distant mountains with a white fairy belt, creating a natural and unrestrained scene of intangibility and ethereality.
(3) Qin Valley
Qin Valley, stretching for about 3.7 kilometers, is bordered by Qin Creek on the south and Taohua Mountain on the north. It is a repository of simple and tranquil pastoral scenery and primitive folk customs, which can trace back to the portrayal of Taohuayuan in Tao Yuanming’s Record of Taohuayuan: “The grove stretched as far as the source of the stream, where the fisherman found a hill with an opening that seemed to be lit within…scattered with lush fields, beautiful ponds and clumps of mulberries and bamboos…both young and old enjoyed a happy life.” The legend goes that the fisherman from Wuling entered Taohuayuan by chance, and following the Qing Creek reached Qin Valley, where he felt the warmth and peace of the human world in a simple and primitive village.
(4) Taohua Mountain
Taohua Mountain, also known as Taogong Mountain, is where visitors can experience the poetic world depicted in Record of Taohuayuan by Tao Yuanming (365—427), a great poet in the Eastern Jin Dynasty in China. It is a “national treasure mountain”, where 15 national-level and 1 provincial-level historical relics reside. It is a “celebrity mountain”, where groups of men of letters have left their footprints. Besides, it is a “culture mountain”, where poems, couplets and inscriptions are shining their glory. Most importantly, it is where the “soul” of Taohuayuan is presented—on the top of the mountain stand towering pavilions and skyscraping pines; in the mountain run the graceful brooks over green rocks, with winding paths leading to secluded quiet; in front of the mountain, peach blossoms dance over the running water and fallen petals lie in profusion. Here you can recapture the thoughts and feelings as depicted in Tao Yuanming’s famous quotation “While picking asters 'neath the Eastern fence, my gaze upon the Southern mountain rests.”
(5) Taoyuan Mountain
Taoyuan Mountain, also called Huangwen Mountain, is located on the south bank of the Yuan River and is the prototype of Taohuayuan described in Tao Yuanming’s Record of Taohuayuan. Since the Eastern Jin Dynasty, it has been the Taoism culture center in the Yuan River and the Li River Basin. With Shuifu Pavilion, Taochuan Palace and Taochuan Academy, it is a harmonious combination of culture and natural landscape. Here you can experience Taoism worship, stroll in the appreciation of classic Chinese works, and enjoy the scenic wonders such as “A Fishing Village Bathed in Sunset Glow” and so on.
(6) Wuliu Lake
Wuliu Lake, connecting Taohua Mountain and Taoyuan Mountain, boasts a harmony of lake and mountains, with green willows swaying ashore and ripples glittering under the Jingying Bridge. Along the shore of the lake lie Light Spot Community conveying the values of “goodness, happiness, warmth, friendliness and harmony” and such cultural relics as Taoyuan Craft Art Museum, Taohuayuan Calligraphy and Painting Academy, Hundred Bed Hall, Humble Room, “Beautiful Taohuayuan” Tablet and so on.
(7) Taohuayuan Ancient Town
Developed and managed by Chongqing Tongyuan Group, Taohuayuan Ancient Town covers an area of 1600 mu and makes a good use of natural landscape of Wuling. It can provide visitors with facilities of food, living, transportation, entertainment, shopping and sightseeing. With its reclusive environment, it will be an internationally well-known tourism resort where human and nature can coexist harmoniously.
(8) Vast Peach Grove
Located on the Taoxian Ridge north of Taohuayuan, Vast Peach Grove is a peach-tree park where you can appreciate more than 100 kinds of peach trees and a romantic land where you can loiter with your lover shoulder by shoulder under 100-year-old peach trees, exchanging smiling honey words with each other.
(9) Taochuan Palace
As the earliest building in Taohuayuan, Taochuan Palace was built in the Jin Dynasty and reached its greatest prosperity in the Tang Dynasty and Song Dynasty. It was magnificent in structure, with 1330 big pillars. In 1112, the Emperor Hui of the Song Dynasty bestowed it a plaque on which he wrote five Chinese characters “Tao Chuan Wan Shou Gong(Taochuan Longevity Palace)”. After that, it reached its heyday as a Taoism destination. Unfortunately, it was ruined in war in the period of Emperor Shun in the Yuan Dynasty. Today’s Taochuan Palace was rebuilt on the original site of the former Taochuan Palace and is as flourishing as it used to be.
3. Market for Overseas Tourists
Overseas tourists from different countries and regions have visited in succession Taohuayuan Tourism Resort since its opening. On August 17th , four hundred leading figures in travelling agencies visited Taohuayuan and took part in “The First Cross-Straits Travelling Intercommunications and Rural Tourism Promotion” activities. From August 31st to September 1st, Taohuayuan Tourism Resort launched the fellowship activities for 120 university students from Mainland and Taiwan with the theme “One Family Cross Straits, One Dream in Taohuayuan”. On September 19th, Taohuayuan Tourism Resort received 60 businessmen from Taiwan Chinese SME Business Leaders. On the opening day (September 22nd), Taohuayuan Tourism Resort received 15 tourists from Germany, America and other countries and regions. Forty-one visitors from Taiwan and 49 individual travelers from abroad visited Taohuayuan at the beginning of November. Up till now, Taohuayuan Tourism Resort has received 685 overseas tourists in total. The newly-built Taohuayuan Tourism Resort won high praises from all the overseas tourists.
