Poetry City in China
Changde is a city with a long history and a rich culture. It is the political, economic and cultural centre in the northwest of Hunan Province, and is also a famous colony for many men of letters, whose poems are indelible in the history of Chinese literature. With years of historical and cultural accumulation, Changde is now making great efforts to build itself into a famous cultural city. It is recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records for the first and unique 3-kilometre-long Poem-engraved Wall in China with the total investment up to 100 million Yuan. Changde has witnessed various literary activities organised both by governmental and non-governmental bodies. There has been a great upsurge in people’s desire to discover and learn poetry. There are nearly a hundred poem associations with more than 14,850 members in Changde. The Poem Society of China once granted Hanshou County the title of the “Hometown of Poetry” and Lixian County the title of “Advanced Poem Teaching Unit”. On September 19th, 2003, Changde City was awarded the title “Poetry City in China”, being the first in China to receive such an accolade.
