Shimen County is located on the border of Hunan and Hubei, looking to Dongting Lake to the east, Taohuayuan to the south, Zhangjiajie to the west, and the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River to the north. It is known as the “gateway to Wuling” and “Arctic of Hunan”. The county has a land area of 3970 square kilometers, and has jurisdiction over 18 township districts, 4 sub-districts, 4 agricultural and forestry farms, and has a total population of 670,000. Shimen County is the gateway to the northwest of Hunan. Its topography is in the shape of a curved gourd. The terrain slopes from west to southeast. The lowest point on the land is the confluence of Caijia Creek and Lishui River, with an altitude of 42.5 meters, and the highest peak is the top of Huping Mountain, with an altitude of 2098.7 meters; the county’s average altitude is about 500 meters. There are Nineteen Peaks, Guanguo Mountain, and Taifu Mountain in the south; Yanzi Mountain, Yunluoguan Mountain, and Hachinohe Mountain in the middle; Dongshan Peak, Liangya Mountain, and Egong Mountain in the west; Taiqing Mountain and Huping Mountain in the north. There are 236 rivers and creeks that run across the entire territory. There are 7 rivers originating from or flowing through the county border: Lishui, Xieshui, Tuoshui, Tanshui, Daoshui, Huangshui, and Chenshui. Tuoshui, Lishui, and Daoshui run from west to east and run through the northern, central, and southern parts of the county, and enter Songzi, Linli County, and then into the Dongting Lake. The water runs from northwest to southeast and is about 165 kilometers long. The four rivers of Tuoshui, Xieshui, Daoshui, and Lishui have river valley plains such as Ziliang, Moshi, Yanchi, Erdu, Yijiadu, and Mengquan, which are the “great-bodied” in the whole county. The annual average temperature in the territory is 16.7℃, the coldest January has an average temperature of 5 degrees, and the hottest July has an average temperature of 28.6 degrees. The annual frost-free period is 282 days, the sunshine is 1646.9 hours, and the annual average rainfall is 1540 mm. A good natural environment creates suitable conditions for the formation of abundant resources.
