Located in the northwest of Hunan province, Taoyuan County is at the junction of Wuling Mountain and Xuefeng Mountain, sharing borders with 3 cities of Yiyang, Huaihua and Zhangjiajie. Named after the ancient attraction Taohuayuan (Land of Peach Blossom), the county is known as "Shangri-La on the earth". It has an area of 4,442 square kilometers, including 28 towns and 413 neighborhoods & villages. The registered population is 962,255 by 2020, including 38,075 residents in Taohuayuan. Among the total population, the urban population is 226,464 and the rural 735,791; the male population is 493,770 and the female 468,485. In 2020, 6,689 babies were born and 8,429 deceased.
The area and the population of Taoyuan County rank 4th and 16th respectively in Hunan province. There are 31 ethnic groups in the county, including Han, Uygur, Hui, Tujia, Miao and Dong. The county is awarded as Old Revolutionary Base County, National Demonstration County for Ecological Civilization Construction, National County for Agricultural Product Quality and Safety, National Hygienic County, and Hunan Provincial Tourism Demonstration County, etc.
In recent years, the county Party committee and the county government have made great efforts to implement the 13th Five-Year Plan to maintain a sustained and stable economic and social development. In 2020, its GDP reached 4298,318 billion Yuan, an increase of 4.1%, compared with that of 2019. In 2020, the cumulative GDP growth rate in the four quarters of the year was -3.7%, 1.5%, 3.0% and 4.1% respectively, and the economic development showed a strong resilience and vitality. The added value of the primary industry was 9.72492 billion Yuan, an increase of 4.4%, compared with that of 2019; the added value of the secondary industry was 13.50152 billion Yuan, an increase of 5.5%; the added value of the tertiary industry was 19.75674 billion Yuan, an increase of 2.7%. The proportion of the primary industry increased by 2.6%, while the tertiary industry decreased by 2.7 %.
Taoyuan County has a splendid culture. Since it was established in the first year of Qiande of the Song Dynasty (AD 963), the county has a history of more than 1,000 years. There are 162 cultural relic sites in the county, including Cailing City of the Warring States Period, the ancient battlefiled of the Eastern Han Dynasty, and the Daxi Culture of Zhoujiagang. The bronze ware Min Fang Lei of the late Shang Dynasty, regarded as the King of Fang Lei (Square Wine-vessel) was unearthed in the county. After the essay Taohuayuanji (Notes of the Land of Peach Blossoms) by Tao Yuanming came out in Eastern Jin Period (317-420), literary geniuses such as Wang Changling, Meng Haoran, Li Bai, Han Yu, Liu Yuxi, Du Mu, Lu You found their traces here, leaving numerous poems and essays praising the county. In modern times, Xu Rongxi Soviet Regime, the first red regime in Northwest Hunan, was built in Taoyuan. Revolutionary pioneers such as Song Jiaoren, Qin Zhen, Jian Bozan, were born in the county. Folk arts and handicrafts are flourishing in the county, too. Nuo Opera of the county is regarded as a living fossil of the drama industry, and Taoyuan -style embroidery is known as the "Mother of Xiang Embroidery".
Taoyuan County is abundant in resources. It has a cultivated land area of 1,448,000 mu and a forest area of 4,079,000 mu. Agricultural products such as Taoyuan black tea, Taoyuan chicken, Taoyuan black pigs are well-known at home and abroad. The county was awarded as National Advanced County in Grain Production, National Oil Production County, High-quality Fruit Base County ofChina, Hometown of Bamboo of China,China's Top Ten Selenium-rich County, and the National Modern Agriculture Demonstration Zone. The Yuan River runs through the county, which provides it with water power resources. Lingjintan Hydropower Station in the county has an installed capacity of 270,000 KW and Taoyuan Hydropower Station 180,000 KW. More than 30 mineral reserves are found in the county, such as diamond, gold, limestone and stone coal. The industrial park of the county, approved as Provincial High-tech Zone, has initially formed a "two plus two" industrial pattern, whose dominating industries are non-ferrous metals, new materials and electronic information while it is characterized by intelligent equipment manufacturing, agricultural products processing and selenium-rich food processing.
As an ecologically friendly county, Taoyuan County is pleasantly livable. The forest coverage rate of the county reaches 65.47%. The Yuan River flows through the county. Scenic spots include Fenglin Flower Garden, a national 4A scenic spot, Yiwangxi, a national 3A scenic spot, Yuyangxizhao, one of the Eight Scenic Spots in Hunan, 100-Mile Yuanjiang Scenic Belt, hot springs in Reshi Town, Laozuyan, as well as Wuyunjie National Nature Reserve, Yuanshui National Wetland Park, Wangyangshan Provincial Nature Reserve and Xingdeshan Provincial Geopark make the county an ideal place for travelling as well as living.
Taoyuan County is also a communications hub with convenient transportation. The county is 180 kilometers away from the provincial capital Changsha, 35 kilometers away from Changde and 15 kilometers away from Taohuayuan Airport. The Guizhou-Zhangjiakou-Changzhou High-speed Railway runs 86 km in the county, and 2 railway stations are built in the urban area of the county and Niuchehe Town. Changde-Jishou Expressway, Changde-Zhangjiajie Expressway, G319 Expressway and S311 Expressway run through its territory, and the Fourth Avenue of Yuanli Expressway was completed and opened to traffic. The main project of the thousand -ton wharf in Zoushi Town has been completed, making it possible for the thousand-ton freighters head directly to the Dongting Lake. The three-dimensional transportation system integrating airports, high-speed railways, expressway and water transportation is being built in the county.
