Waterway, with the advantages of large traffic volume and low cost and being environmentally-friendly, was once an important transportation tool in Changde. However, it declined gradually after 1990s. In 1999, Changde City began to build Changde Port, the second largest port of Hunan Province, in Yanguan, Changde to revive Changde’s waterway. It covers an area of 200 mu and has a construction period of 12 years. In 2005, the container terminal in it was put into operation. In 2008, the first stage project and the second stage project of Changde Port were completed with 2 thousand-ton berths, 2 five hundred-ton berths and 1 three hundred-ton berth. It is designed to have an annual capacity of 1.2 million ton of bulk cargo and an annual capacity of 20 thousand containers. It possesses 10 cranes of different sizes with the maximum crane capacity of 40 ton.
The Yuan River is 2 meters deep in every season. Therefore, it is navigable for thousand-ton ship all year round. Since 2008, freights can come in and go out Changde Port directly and so its throughput increases greatly. It not only provides a convenient passage for export of Changde’s products to outside, but also offers a transshipment station for export of Xiangxi’s minerals to foreign countries. With the advance of industrialization and fast development of urban construction in Changde, Changde Port will become more and more prosperous.
